Best Practice Achievements
2019: We use energy specialists to evaluate our energy consumption. We had an energy audit from our local utility and we chose a wind energy option to source our store's electricity. Our energy use has declined year after year.
We have replaced all showroom and office fixtures to LED lights. On a continuous basis, we replace older LED bulbs with newer bulbs which are more efficient and give better quality light.
Recycling and Reclamation: We are able to make use of the vast recycling resources available here in Portland. All usable furniture and mattresses that we pick up from customers are donated to our local community partners for local reuse. All cardboard, paper, glass and plastics are collected and taken to recycling centers.
2010: Investigated and implemented more compact fluorescent and LED lighting for our showroom.
2019: We are happy to participate in the Wood Furniture Scorecard and show a very good score, close to the top! We have created a Wood Sourcing Policy for our store's purchasing and posted it on our website. Our intent is to continue to source furniture from companies that use FSC wood, reclaimed wood, and wood that comes from small, well-managed farms.
We will continue our search for the finest and most sustainable/organic sleep products available anywhere. We will replace any vendor who waivers from providing natural and organic materials in their products. We will bolster our website to provide updated information about sustainable products for our customers.
2010: We are going to drop vendors who are unable or willing to give us a clear and transparent look at how their products are produced.
2019: We have information in the store which explains the materials used in the furniture. Staff directs customers to manufacturer's website for technical information. We keep wood samples in the showroom to use as teaching tools. There are GREEN Accredited Professionals on staff and everyone is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the sustainable stand we are taking.
2010: We are planning to include seminars about the SFC and sustainability both in the store and at local shows.
