Sustainable Materials
We make a conscious effort to manage our materials selection, seeking materials we are confident are sustainable, such as legally harvested forest products, responsibly produced plantation products, and recycled content:
Recycling and Reclamation
We factor disassembly, recyclability and product reclamation into buying decisions. We offer a product reclamation/product reuse policy:
Return and Reuse
We use recycled or recyclable packing/packaging materials, offer blanket-wrap transportation arrangements for customers and have a carton return/reuse policy:
Chain of Custody
We ask for verifiable chain of custody documents (i.e. legal logging certifications) before buying products containing wood:
Decrease use of Toxic Chemicals
We have decreased our use/acceptance of known toxic chemicals for treatments, binders and finishes, replacing compounds that compromise indoor air quality and are harmful to human health:
Low Environmental Impact Textiles
We are asking our vendors for textiles that have a lower environmental impact, i.e. organic cotton in place of conventionally-grown cotton, as well as seeking other eco-friendly textiles:
Life Cycle Analysis
We are moving forward on doing a Life Cycle Analysis and/or are applying for SMaRT certification:
Local Sourcing
We extract, manufacture and distribute for consumer use within a 500 mile radius for at least a portion of our product line:
Third Party Certifications

In keeping with our commitment to continual improvement, we are planning to take the following actions this year: On reducing energy consumption:

2019: Naturepedic is in its fifth year purchasing Renewable Energy Credits RECs for 100% of electricity usage from a Green-e certified supplier. Our RECs cover our manufacturing facilities and this year we have added 100% coverage for all of our Organic Mattress Gallery retail stores. We will continue our membership as an EPA Green Power Partner and are pursuing Energy Star carbon offsets as well as Carbon Neutral certification..

2016: Naturepedic is in its second year purchasing Renewable Energy Credits RECs for 100% of electricity usage from a Green-e certified supplier. We will continue our membership as an EPA Green Power Partner and will undergo an energy audit to find even more ways to conserve.

2015: At the end of 2014, Naturepedic announced a formal commitment to supporting renewable energy. Moving forward, 100% of the company’s electricity usage supports renewable wind energy through RECs purchased Green-e certified NativeEnergy. Naturepedic has also become an EPA Green Power Partner. Naturepedic will explore ways to decrease its already low energy footprint through efficiency upgrades and process changes.

2014: Employees are given the option of van pick-up; over half opt-in. In reducing our use of latex in favor of hybrid designs, we will reduce energy consumption incurred through global transportation of latex.

2013: Employees are given the option of van pick-up; over half opt-in.

In keeping with our commitment to continual improvement, we are planning to take the following actions this year: On how we will manage our primary material or service to a more sustainable direction:

2019: Naturepedic continues to advocate and support organic, environmental, and health oriented organizations. This year we have added certifications form Vegan.com and PETA. We have also helped our suppliers to become Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-Rainforest Alliance (RA) certified.

2016: Naturepedic continues its usage of organic and natural fibers and natural latex. We will continue vetting vendors against one or more environmental and health certifications including, but not limited to, GOTS and GREENGUARD. At the end of 2015 Naturepedic was awarded a Forest Stewardship® Council (FSC®) Chain of Custody Certification for natural latex from Rainforest Alliance.

2015: In line with our commitment to encourage less waste, we are continuing our commitment to modular designs, which allow mattress components to be replaced when needed rather than requiring an entire mattress to be discarded. Adding to our EOS customizable solution, we will also launch zip-out modular designs to our luxury series adult mattresses.

Supporting sustainable farming and fair labor, Naturepedic sources organic latex certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard. Additionally, Rainforest Alliance has certified Naturepedic for Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody of natural latex that meets FSC standards.

2014: In evaluating impact on global sustainability, we have opted to discontinue our all-latex models and latex bases in favor of more sustainable designs. We are exploring the use of PLA sourced from organic and non-GMO renewable crops. We only buy materials approved by the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) and tested and certified to GREENGUARD “Gold” emissions standards.

2013: We only buy materials approved by the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) and tested and certified by Greenguard "Select" and "Children's and Schools" standards

In keeping with our commitment to continual improvement, we are planning to take the following actions this year: On education and promotion of the sustainability cause:

2019: Naturepedic has continued to advocate material transparency and has been added to the Zero Toxics Product Registry. This organization reviews all the material content in products and verifies that no toxic chemicals are used or present in the finished products.

2016: Naturepedic will expand its support of environmental and sustainability organizations including the Sustainable Furnishings Council, the American Sustainable Business Council, and the Environmental Work Group, among many others. In support of material transparency, Naturepedic is participating in the new Bedfax disclosure program.

2015: Naturepedic will continue working with top environmental and sustainability organizations including the Sustainable Furnishings Council, The Ecology Center, and the Environmental Media Association (EMA) to educate both the public and business world on safer chemistries and healthier options; Naturepedic is featured in the EMAs online series A Life Less Toxic ( http://www.ema-online.org/a_life_less_toxic ). Company founder Barry Cik and others will continue active roles as speakers and participants for initiatives educating, advocating for, and encouraging development of safer and healthier consumer products. These appearances include a panel discussion on flame retardants at the 2015 Midwest Bioeconomy & Safer Products Summit and participation in safer chemistries workgroups with BizNGO.

2014: We will actively promote and encourage sustainability through our messaging and public outreach, which includes speaking events, blogs and cooperative ventures with sustainability organizations. We will continue to work with the SFC in promoting a message of sustainability.

2013: Working with SFC to maximize delivery of the message.
