SFC is pleased to be celebrating the adoption of a sustainable procurement ordinance in Minneapolis, with a press conference and awards event at SFC member Martin Patrick 3. The event will celebrate SFC members Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, and Room & Board as well as Pat Shea, City of St. Cloud Public Works Director, and Hon. Cam Gordon, Chairman, Minneapolis Council Environment Committee for their leadership in best practices for sustainability.
Consensus-based sustainable procurement has its roots in 1991 at the first US Green Building Council Board Meeting where life cycle assessment (LCA) standards were initiated to start regulating global supply chain environmental impacts. As a result, the market for sustainable products is growing. These business and government leaders recognize that their communities are healthier for their choices.
Last year—some 23 years later—the states of Washington, New York, and Minnesota endorsed sustainable procurement based on a consensus standard developed in an American National Standards Institute accredited process. These were landmark events requiring LCA for 10 environmental and health impacts including toxicity – and more.
A consensus-based, democratic approach is used to avoid costly anti-trust and restraint of trade litigation against adopters and standard setters that typically bring progress to a halt. This consensus approach ensures the protection of fundamental due process and constitutional rights of both interested and affected parties.

The Sustainable Furnishings Council is an educational organization working to sustain healthy environments, inside and outside. A balanced coalition of industry players, SFC was founded at High Point, NC in October 2006 to promote sustainable practices among manufacturers, retailers, and consumers alike.
The SFC recognizes the overwhelming scientific consensus that our world is experiencing dangerous global climate change. SFC members acknowledge the tremendous urgency, and take immediate steps to minimize carbon emissions, waste stream pollutants, un-recyclable content and primary materials from unsustainable sources from any product platform under their control. SFC members utilize Life Cycle Assessment as the best method for analyzing the environmental and health impact of their products, and a verifiable chain of custody as the only acceptable method for tracking wood flow. SFC members support the triple bottom line of PEOPLE - PLANET - PROFITS and lead the industry in developing awareness of best practices throughout their supply chains. Members accomplish this goal by increasing their purchases from suppliers that show continual improvement toward meeting our high standards.
