Thinking of buying furniture?  Want to know which companies are serious about sustainability?

Power to the people! That must be our mindset when it comes to being advocates for our Earth. Sustainable businesses have a critical role to play in advocating for greener practices, but so do we as consumers and citizens! 

Sustainability is what we’re all about. We also love lifting up the individuals and organizations in the furnishings industry who are doing things the right way! In the worldwide sustainability movement, many of the most influential movers and shakers are women.  

There haven’t been many “wood recycling” campaigns out there lately, but making it possible to reuse one of our most valuable resources is vitally important. Wood is a durable resource -- it lasts for a very long time. Literally tons of recyclable wood are disposed of improperly every year in the form of old furniture, stumps, limbs, clean timber, and dimensional lumber. 

Forests are crucial, and we must prioritize them. They provide vital habitats for thousands of species, livelihood for people, and natural filtration for our air. Deforestation is the second leading cause of climate change, second only to the burning of fossil fuels. Cutting down our forests without considering or preparing for the repercussions only makes our earth less inhabitable.

Recycling metal in the United States dates all the way back – in 1776 revolutionaries recycled to provide material to fight the War of Independence.

Let’s talk about textiles. Everyone uses textiles, but not everyone recycles them. We live in an era of “fast-fashion”, where consumers buy the latest and greatest, sometimes at the expense of quality and sustainability.

As an organization, we’re gearing up to release some NEW CONTENT regarding the latest and greatest in sustainability. Our job is two-fold: First, provide our members with the tools and the knowledge to make their furniture more eco-friendly. And second, help consumers find healthy furnishings. We are a coalition across the industry with the power to change how furniture is manufactured, designed, sold, and bought.
